By Rik Myslewski in San Francisco

More snippets of news emerged today about Intel’s upcoming replacement to its low-power Atom processor, set to launch in the second half of this year.

As we reported last September and updated last week, the Atom heir, code-named Pineview, will be available in both single-core and dual-core versions, each with an on-chip memory controller and integrated graphics processor (IGP), and each employing hyperthreading to nearly double each core’s performance – theoretically.

Today the usually reliable Taipei news service, DigiTimes, reported that Pineview will be manufactured using a 45-nanometer process (no surprise there), will have a clock speed higher than the Atom N270′s 1.67GHz, and that even though the IGP will be based on Intel’s existing GMA 950, its own clock will increase from the current 133MHz in the Atom implementation to 200MHz.

More interesting are new details about Pineview’s real-estate needs and the power-miserliness we discussed earlier.

Thanks to what DigiTimes confirms as “built-in northbridge functions, including a memory controller and IGP,” Pineview will require a mere 773 square millimeters of motherboard space, down 60 percent from the 2174 square millimeters needed by the Atom N270 and its support chips.

In addition – and despite the increase of the memory controller’s clock from 533MHz to 667MHz – Pineview will have a lower maximum TDP (thermal design power, a gauge of a processor’s power needs and, therefore, heat dissipation) than the N270: 7 watts instead of 8, with average power descending from 2.5 to 2 watts.

Finally, DigiTimes says that Pineview will have a four-layer construction. That’s down from Atom’s six layer, a change that should reduce costs.

So, in sum: If DigiTimes is to be believed, Pineview is shaping up to be faster, smaller, less power-hungry, and cheaper than Intel’s current fast, small, power-miserly, and inexpensive Atom. ®
Starting from the CPU / processor, RAM, video cards, hard disk, and so on. On the motherboard there is a BIOS (Basic Input / Output System), which will in-loading first system. BIOS define the components are connected with motherboard.
What the Make A Difference motherboard with the Other?

What makes the difference between a motherboard with one another. Before making a choice for the motherboard, there are some things that need to known. Here are some important points that need to be from a motherboard.

CPU Socket
The first is determining the CPU that will be used. This will greatly affect the choice of motherboard that will be used. Both AMD and Intel use the pin layout different processor. On the motherboard, the term is usually known as the Intel or AMD platform platform. Both platforms. These will distinguish the main processor socket used. For now, AMD uses socket 754, 939 and AM2 for its desktop processor. Meanwhile, using the Intel LGA775.

Chipset
The chipset is also an important part that needs to be from a motherboard. From the chipset will determine the features and support facilities that can be made possible by the motherboard. For the chipset will determine the type of support such as the use of the processor, RAM modules that are used, the availability of supporting an
integrated graphic controller, a bus link to graphic card, and so on. In some motherboards also use the classic scenario, using two chipsets, Northbridge and southbrige. Northbridge determine if more support for the CPU, RAM and a bus. Including support for the use of dual VGA, both with CrossFire or SLI. Once the importance of the role of the chipset, so we consider the options chipset is the second most important option after selecting a processor platform that will
used. Because the chipset is integrated with the motherboard, it is not possible to upgrade without replacing the motherboard chipset overall. Southbridge to serve the needs of I / O, such as for storage, USB, and so on. Some are equipped with a controller for additional support using RAID, Firewire, and others. Chip producers have different approaches to this.

Form Factor
The size of a motherboard be different. Fortunately, for this motherboard manufacturers to follow the rules form factor. So although the size may vary, but there are standards that must be followed. Mounting holes, such as location, location, availability of slots and connectors. Form factor is the most used on the desktop PC is atx. However, there is still some size form factor that also available. LGA775 for Intel and for AMD Socket AM2 socket is the most widely used now.

For starters, it’s expensive, with prices starting at £399. It’s also very long, measuring 267mm nose to tail, although in fairness that’s the same length as an Nvidia GeForce GTX 280. The third snag is that the double-slot design is bulky, gets darned hot and exhausts a jet of heated air from the rear of your PC.

Sapphire has come up with a dramatic solution to the issue of heat with its water-cooled Atomic HD4870 X2.

Water cooling your PC isn’t a new concept and it’s relatively easy to add a water block, pump and radiator to keep your CPU cool. Doing the same for your graphics card is a different proposition as you have to dismantle the original cooler before you attach the VGA water block and hook it into the cooling loop.

Did you hear that whooshing noise? That was the sound of your warranty flying out through the window.

If you fancy water-cooling your Radeon HD 4870 X2, you can connect it to your existing system with a water block from the likes of EKWaterBlocks at a cost of £85. Add in two hose fittings and some tubing and the cost comes to about a hundred quid.

Sapphire’s take on things is rather more sophisticated, as the Atomic is a prebuilt cooling system that uses Asetek LCLC hardware that’s ready to plug into your PC. The GPU water block is attached to the HD 4870 X2 graphics card with six screws and covers both GPUs as well as the 2GB of GDDR 5 memory. The 6.3mm water hoses are connected to the CPU water block and the heat exchanger, which has a 120mm fan mounted piggyback style.

The CPU water block has the pump mounted on top and there’s no separate reservoir of coolant so the whole setup is compact and neat. Once the graphics card is installed and the CPU water block in place, you only have to attach the heat exchanger to a suitable mount inside your case, probably at the top, and you’re good to go. There are no hose connections to make, no coolant to fill, no bleeding and little likelihood of leaks.

By: Tony Smith
Intel has rolled out some new CPUs and cut the prices of old ones. The chip giant’s desktop product list now includes the Core 2 Quad 9550s, Q9400s and Q8200s. The suffix indicates they’re all low-power version of existing quad-core chips, each sporting a reduced TDP of 65W, down from 95W.

Clocked at, respectively, 2.83GHz, 2.66GHz and 2.33GHz, the CPUs all sit on a 1333MHz frontside bus. They contain 12MB, 6MB and 4MB of L2 cache, and are priced at $369, $320 and $245 when ordered in batches of 1000.

The price cuts – of between 16 per cent and 40 per cent – take the 95W Core 2 Quads down to below those prices, leaving us in the unusual situation of a 3GHz Q9650 costing less than a slower, lower-model-number part, the Q9550s.

Intel also introduced the 2.93GHz Core 2 Duo E7500 – 3MB L2, 1066MHz FSB, $133 – and the 2.8GHz Pentium Dual Core E5400 – 2MB L2, 800MHz FSB, $84.

Both the Core 2 Duo and the Pentium Dual Core lines also experience downward price adjustments, of up to 15 per cent and 24 per cent, respectively. ®
